   Had been shouting so loud at my mother-in-law, who can't seem to keep track of her tiny hearing aides, that my throat was literally sore. This has worked wonders. She is in a nursing home and has been rather isolated because of her inability to hear. This device has made it possible for her to hear the aides when they talk to her and to carry on conversation with other residents at the dinner table. She is 95 and also nearly blind. There is an on/off volume button on one side and a tuning button on the other. We had to tape the tuning button into place, as she got the two confused. I do wish that the on/off button and the volume button were two different things, so that we could have it set properly for her and all she would need to do is turn it on; but she has learned. Even so, I rate this high...it has changed her outlook on her situation and made it easier for us to take.

   We use these at my church, based on a recommendation from my uncle, who has had hearing loss his whole life. They are extremely effective, especially for the price. The mic can be pointed right at the speaker, unlike a conventional hearing aid, so you can hear what or who you want to hear without as much side noise. You can also extend the microphone using a common 1/8" cable and place it near a TV speaker or radio. One guy I know places it on the armrest of his car, pointed to the back seat, so he can hear the conversation on a drive. The included headphones are adequate; any standard headphones or earbuds can be used. Won't solve the stigma attached to using a "hearing aid" but it will definitely help keep you in the conversation.

   I am a physician who recently purchased this AudialPrime Sound PKT for my 100 year older grandmother whose hearing has declined rapidly over the last year. My grandmother had attempted use of hearing aids in the past though was unwilling to use them due to discomfort and "not wanting to look old"(yes, she is a spitfire of a 100 year old). As a completely healthy and active centenarian, her only medical issue has been presbycusis, age related hearing loss. Not only has her inability to participate in conversations been frustrating, but the volume level on the TV has been equally disturbing for any visitors stopping by to see her. After connecting the system and giving it a test run, i stood with my back turned approximately10- 15ft away from her(as far as the cord would extend) and whispered questions into the amplifier. Amazingly, she heard every word i said and was able to answer questions and hear EVERYTHING without difficulty. The TV volume level has finally returned to normal...More

My father has spent the past few years cupping his hand behind his ear to hear dialogue in movies and television shows in order to clearly understand what the characters are saying. When my parents bought a flat screen, the problem worsened because of the typically poor sound, so we bought external speakers to help. This served only to increase the bass for music and action scenes, but still didn't help him with quieter scenes. He asked if I could look up a "good cheap" hearing device to help him hear dialogue better. I looked at the reviews for many of the cheaper devices and saw they wouldn't include the features he would want or wouldn't be durable enough. The AudialPrime Sound Pocketalker was definitely out of the range he wanted to pay, but it had excellent reviews, and I wanted him to have a quality device, so I bought it for him. I looked at the reviews for many of the cheaper devices and saw they wouldn't include the features he would want or wouldn't be durable enough. The AudialPrime Sound Pocketalker was definitely out of the range he wanted to pay, but it had excellent reviews, and I wanted him to have a quality device, so I bought it for him. He wasn't pleased with the price, as he's generally skeptical and prefers a good (cheap) bargain. The product arrived within days, and I unboxed it for him and went over the various parts that came with it (see product listing). I installed the batteries, showed him the volume control, and gave him the headset. The setup was easy and fast. He put it on and adjusted the volume a bit, and immediately could hear better. We tried lowering the volume on the television, talking in low voices, playing scenes with quiet dialogue, and he could hear it all. My dad isn't an easily excited man, and no one who knows him would use the word "giddy" to ever describe him, until now. He was actually joyful at the difference the Pocketalker made. He's had hearing issues for many years, but now in his seventies, he didn't realize how much he was even missing (conversations between my mother and me in the same room that he was completely unaware of and we thought he was hearing). He's had the device now for about a month, so I asked him what he would rate it now that he's had it a while and used it quite a bit (mostly for watching movies). He told me to give it five stars, as the device works as it claims, and the batteries are still going strong with moderate usage (a few hours a night typically). He had no negatives about the device, which in itself is a miracle. For my part, I'm just happy to see him using it, enjoying it, and being a part of the conversation again. It was worth every penny just for that.

   1st! MANY thanks to 'rosieandme' for that review. I just acquired a $1000 hearing aid........but it 'fell short' of what I wanted.....its not loud enough :-( soooo I looked on and found this! :-) WHAT a game changer.........as stated! Sight unseen, I ordered the Olympus Mic as recommended.....The 'trick' of putting the Olympus ME-52W Noise Canceling Mic in the middle of the Restaurant table OR extending it to the shirt of my eating companion........FANTASTIC :-))))) I'm using my Sony high quality ear buds into my one good/better ear, and :-)))))))) I WISH my hearing aid was a loud as this thing......but alas.......... The wires are a pain............but so be it ! I also wish that there was more Bass response; I have the Tone Control ALL the way down, and I called Olympus....but the next mic up that has Bass response is ~ $200 ;-( I would humbly suggest to AudialPrime, that they make a deal with Olympus and include this Mic and perhaps Sony Earbuds and Headphones

A slightly stubborn person who has used cheaper, quick to break, versions of this style of hearing assist in the past. What WE liked, as her guests, we liked the idea of a longer microphone cord option so that the person she has the most trouble of hearing could possibly just set it by them or even hold it. Also at restaurant tables she can't hear anything so, while sad, we have all become used to just talking around her because she can't hear....frustrating for all parties involved. We haven't tested this yet but I assume that she could pass the corded mic about the table to hear people.....it may not be the most convenient option but as I mentioned there's a bit of stubbornness involved that means going to get fitted for a hearing aid is OUT OF THE QUESTION (sigh) She started to declare her hearing was just gone and gave up on replacing her little 20 dollar units that, while breaking quickly, DID let her hear...also batteries were mysteriously never charged or purchased... I also liked that this unit has a degree of control over the sound beyond volume. I tested it listening to my husband's voice, who is the hardest for her to hear, and pre-set it to what made it sound sharpest and clearest before we gifted her this unit. Long story made a wee bit shorter...it worked! She popped the ear buds in (we purchased some more comfortable ones), fiddled with volume a bit and could hear us all well enough to actually converse. If you do something like this for a loved one I suggest doing as we did and purchasing a ginormous pack of the basics AAA batteries that are required to go along with it. If it works for your loved one at all removing that apparently insurmountable hassle of battery maintenance with recharging etc can go a long way I suspect towards easing tensions and allowing them the freedom to just pop a new set in when ever they need. I would like to point out that I did as another reviewer (I think the one voted most helpful in this item's feedback) and purchased some panasonic ear buds, a noise canceling lavalier mic for another mic option and the little connector thingy. As I said check out their in depth review, their suggested additional purchases were spot on. I removed all the extra packaging, tidied the cords and presented it all in a nice box for her, so she can keep all her ear assist goodies in one place. Anyways, WORTH THE MONEY. We actually suggested, months ago, she look in to getting this unit but as I mentioned there was some degree of stubborness...a sort of giving up/acceptance that she was now "deaf" If it had not worked out, well...it's worth the small investment to help. We suspected she could make use of it and she was delighted with it. I'll post an update if she shares any long term notes on her personal experience with the whole thing. So far though, pretty great for a right out of the box device. As I said, it was the first time in agggges that we talked and she heard and talked back and made for a lively, entertaining get together. She used the lavalier mic option we added to this and it has a 3 foot cord and we just popped it in the middle of the kitchen table and she apparently heard and acted and responded as if she could hear all 3 of us sitting there with her! Success!!!! We kind of feel..and this is regular hearing persons point of view so maybe take it with a large grain of salt, that this sort of pocketalker hearing assist unit could be superior for some one with a hearing disadvantage as compared to a traditional hearing aid. The sort that goes in/behind the ear. In that sound waves have to go in the ear and this unit has a corded mic, what could be better for increasing the chances of hearing correctly than having the option of poking a mic right by a person's mouth, rather than have their sound waves carry to your ear? I realize this doesn't fit every one's situation, and having a long cord may not be convenient but it's certainly not as inconvenient and heart breaking as just NOT hearing......    I have spent thousands on various devices. This a great help. The mirophone unplugs from the unit and can be plugged into an extion cord so that my father can keep the unit in his hand or shirt pocket. I can hold the microphone in my hand or set it on a table or chair arm and speak normaly. He has the volume and tone controls . The microphone can also be left plugged in to the unit and held in his hand or left in his shirt pocketI can drive and visit with him without leaning over and shouting at him. Going to the Doctor is much easier now that the Doctor can hold the microphone and speak quietly into it. I orderded the one that came with a 25' cord and ordered a 12 foot cord as well. He can set the microphone next to the TV and run th long cord to his chair or bed. This worked great for a stay in the Hospital. At home his TV EARS work better. TV EARS were a big inprovement in his qualit of life so I also reccomend them My father has $6000 dollar hearing aids but these work ...More

   We purchased this for an elderly man who didn't want to pay the price for hearing aids. Finally, we were able to communicate with him without a dry erase board. He was able to wear it comfortably for several hours while we played cards. The earphones do run large and do not adjust small enough even for a big head. We don't quite understand the mono comment from other reviews as we are receiving sound from both ears. The directions do not explain the tone button but found that it adjusted for someone who hears better with either high or low ranges. When putting in the batteries, be very careful to place the cover back on flatly and line up both sets of tabs before sliding it closed. We lined up the obvious set of tabs and must have bent the second tabs even though we thought we were sliding it in flat. Customer service at AudialPrime Sound was great.    This is working just great for me. At 69 years old, my hearing has lost some precision in understanding soft voices in person and on TV. It is perfect for watching TV shows with hard to understand dialog. Also I use it to help me hear my care giver better. I've been using the ear bud and it works very well for my use. This is one of the best purchases I've made on , and I've made many! I had been using bulky earphones that plugged into the TV before and hated to wear them. With this, others in the room hear TV normally; I just dial my unit up and enjoy the sound too. This has been the best solution for me and I've looked at a lot of options. There isn't one thing I don't like about it.

   I sometimes have difficulty hearing in a group of people and, after a particularly exasperating experience, I consulted an audiologist. She recommended the Pocketalker Ultra. I ordered one from after reading the review that says: "I have a drawer full of in-the-ear and behind-the-ear hearing aids that I spent thousands for and none are as good as the Ultra." I showed it last Thanksgiving to a 92 year old friend who had just about lost her hearing. She said, pretty much, "Wow!". Her son ordered one for her and this is what he said in an email I received today: "Many thanks again, Sandy, for turning us on to this remarkable machine. We've got her set up now with the mic near the chair at the end of the bed. And she can hear anyone in the room with just slight volume adjustment. Karen (her daughter) and she had the first conversation they've had in years. So many thanks again from all of us."    Most hearing aids are very expansive because the manufactures want them almost invisible. The side effects of making them tiny are increased cost, compromised functionality, and worse performance. The 'Pocketalker Ultra' is different. The designer put effectiveness above everything else. With a pair of long wires, my father is always able to put the microphone in front of the people or a TV, and hear every single word ---- much better than using an expansive hearing aid. It makes a huge difference to his daily life. And this is extremely important: the device uses AAA batteries, which can last very long time! Finally we no longer need to worry about father forgetting to turn the device off and the battery damaged the hearing aid. The included headphone works very well, no need to be replaced.    This product was very helpful while I waited on hearing aids. My hearing loss was caused by not wearing adequate ear protection at an indoor shooting range. I used this product for three months until it became obvious my hearing was not going to come back. I used the regular microphone, even though I ordered a directional mike as one reviewer suggested. The regular mike worked best for me. Usually kept the unit in my shirt pocket, though sometimes I clipped it on the pocket front. While helpful, this product would not serve as an alternative to hearing aids for me. My hearing aids work so much better. Hearing loss for me was in the higher ranges, so I kept the tone control turned all the way toward the treble end. Volume was not a problem. I usually kept it set between two and three. In church I would put the ear piece in to hear the pastor, but take it out during singing. At business meetings I just laid the unit on the table. Always found it awkward to use with the phone, so I didn...More

If you leave the microphone in the pocket talker, it will pick up speech and noise at a distance, but when you talk, your speech is close to the microphone, and your voice is very loud when you talk. If the microphone is at a distance, you hear yourself at normal volume. And, since the Pocketalker is an amplifier only, it amplifies noise as well as speech. When I place the microphone by the TV, I can hear the TV fine. I can also hear the air noise when the air conditioning fan comes on, and I can hear water running in the kitchen, etc., in addition to the TV speech. This isn't bad, but I wasn't expecting it. I also researched the available units, and found two versions of the Pocketalker. This one has tone control in addition to volume control. Tone control is a must-have for me. I was able to adjust the tone just a little toward treble, and it made a huge difference in my ability to understand the speech. I have serious hearing loss, and only have to use this unit at about 1/3 volume. It has plenty more amplification power than I need. I don't agree that the ear bud or headphones are not good quality as some reviews indicate. I prefer the headphones because they are more comfortable, and I think the sound quality is better. They are very light and comfortable. He headphones are not like ear muffs. You can still hear sound from others talking to you through the headphones. I'm getting hearing aids soon, but I plan to keep this Pocketalker. I have read that it can be used with hearing aids for severe hearing loss, and I might use it when not wearing my future hearing aids. It would be simply perfect for a person taking the microphone to tell you something, as in a noisy car, or to whisper to you in a quiet environment. In closing, this product is great, and I know it is what they use in medical and long-term care facilities for people with hearing deficits, so it must be the best. The price is a fraction of retail, and other online sellers. Understanding that it is an amplifier, and does not filter out noise, it provides comfortable hearing when watching TV, and works great for speech communication with others! It is a great product! It is a blessing in affordable hearing!

   I have had problems with my hearing for many years. Had to buy a hearing aid for my Right ear, which lacks low frequency . My left ear is the opposite. I can hear some low frequency ,but because i cannot afford to buy a hearing aide - $1500 , (which is what it cost to buy my right hearing aide) I lived without one. Finding this "Pock talker" was a great help. I am able to hear extremely well now in my left ear and with both aides , works just right. I greatly enjoy adjusting the low frequency control for my left ear..works great!The single ear phone that comes with it ,in my opinion ,is not worth using. So bought another set and did not use the right side ear plug. For now I am thinking about cutting that right side. I will stick with the Pocket talker and my right hearing aide, until I will be able to save up for another hearing aide for my left ear . I also want to replace(just keep it for a backup) my right hearing aide. The reason is because after I remove it ,it feels ...More

   I have gone thru $5000 in hearing aids and still could not understand the spoken word. Had to use headsets to hear the tv. Couldn't understand anyone if their back was turned to me. I have had this ultra for one day now. Maybe I'll have problems down the road with it, I don't know. But for now, this is worth all of the hearing aids I have had (4). I can understand my wife from a different room or floor in our house now. I have been hearing stuff for a long time but now I can UNDERSTAND......Big difference between hearing and understanding.. I am 74 and I highly recommend this pocketalker...If I change my mind I will print a retraction ( not likely). This is the first time I have felt compelled to write a review, even though I depend on reviews from others before buying something.

   I have lost a lot of my high pitch hearing and I purchased a hearing aid from Costco. By the way, if you need a hearing aid, that is the place to buy, as they cost about a third of what you normally would have to pay. In any case, the hearing aid was fine, but my life style has very few times when I need or can use the aid. The place I need a hearing aid is when watching TV. But to invest $1800 for an aid that I use only to watch TV was not a good idea. I returned the aid to Costco, as they have a three month free trial, and purchased the AudialPrime Sound Pocket Talker. It works perfect and I can set it to increase the volume of the high sounds. I think it is even better then the hearing aid for that use. The little AAA battery lasts forever. It is amazing. The headphone that comes with it, works but did not fit correctly, so I purchased from AudialPrime Sound, one that is better, with more adjustment. It did not cost much. Maybe about $20.00 and worth it.

   This product is a God-send for my family. I have a stubborn mother who refuses to spend money on quality hearing aids, so we have been yelling in her "good ear" for the past few years. She ended up in the hospital after a fall & they had a Pocket Talker available. My mom was the first to use it. What a GIFT!! She was able to hear the nurses, doctors and all of us! All we had to do was talk into the microphone. It was the first time in years that I could have a conversation with my mom where she didn't just smile and nod her head like she knew what I was saying. I came home & found the same item on . Even better, I found it with headphones. The hospital's unit didn't have headphones, since all patients get tv headphones. Those work, but not as well as the ones meant for the Pocket Talker.    After years of exhausting shouting at my 87 yr. old Dad, lost hearing aids and overall frustration and irritation i bought my Dad this Pocket talker. He had a lot of resistance to using it and was fiddling with it and even lost the mic (which costs $35 to replace) and it was at the top of his technological ability (the other being the remote control) BUT after a few weeks of this, he is using it and can hear really well when he uses it. I upgraded the earphone to noise canceling for him for better quality sound.This was the last ditch effort to be able to speak in a normal tone and volume to my dad and it is working so far. If you can get your loved one to use it, it's worth the investment.

   I bought the Pocketalker Ultra Duo Pack for my grandmother who is in a nursing home. Without this device, my grandmother cannot hear me when I speak to her. With this device, she can hear me perfectly when I speak into the microphone. Also, the healthcare providers are able to communicate more effectively when providing care to my grandmother. When I put on the headphones, I hear a little background noise but for all intents and purposes this does not matter as my grandmother's ability to communicate outweighs the background noise issue. Of course, my grandmother's hearing aides would be more effective, but in the nursing home setting they could become misplaced quite easily. I recommend that you keep plenty of batteries on hand, as when my grandmother falls asleep with the device turned on, the batteries tend to wear out more quickly.    This product was recommended by my husband's new audiologist for his mother in the nursing home. New hearing aids were not advisable due to her health and age, and also that her ear canals were collasped (I am not a medical person). Her current hearing aids could not be repaired. We knew she was failing because she no longer felt part of this world. She could hear nothing. The problems this caused were so numerous, physically, mentally and emotionally. But this product.....had we only known earlier we feel we might have had more time with her. She could hear! She was so happy. Thank you AudialPrime Sound, and Audiologist for this Pocketalker. It made her last few weeks happier. Our grief is not that she is gone, we know where she went, but that we didn't know about Pocketalker months earlier. We have left the device with the nursing home in the hopes that no elderly person is left alone again.

   My 86 year old father's hearing had deteriorated to the point that we had to scream for him to hear us and in order for him to hear the TV, the sound had to be at max and played through the stereo at max. The walls were rattling and pictures had to be readjusted due to the rattling. It was so bad that I feared the neighbors would call the police. My father is bedridden and under hospice care, and not able to see a doctor for his hearing issues. I researched OTC hearing aids, however there were too many negative reviews. More internet research pointed me in the direction of the Pocketalker, and now peace has been restored! Dad is able to hear his visitors and hear the TV. Really an answer to many prayers! Pros: super easy to set up & use, long battery life, and well worth the price! Con: as several have mentioned already, the headphones are too large (my father has a large head and they are still too large).    I Usually don't endorse anything but recently I took my elderly mom out and she couldn't hear a thing I was saying. Her hearing has been getting worse over the last few years. I checked in on hearing aids and they are a few thousand dollars. I did a search and found the Pocketalker and on you can read reviews. So i purchased it. I just gave it to mom and she lite up like a Christmas tree. I was amazed how well she can hear now. I was behind her and whisper and she heard me. I covered my mouth and talk to her real soft from on the other side of the room and she heard me. She was smiling the entire time. So if you know someone in your family that is hard of hearing and you can't afford a hearing aid i would get this. I really believe its better than a hearing aid more than likely she can hear better than i can now

   For my mother. Before using this device, she would makes us repeat every single word we would say. Now, with the Pocketalker she can hear fine on level 4 (10 max). She has almost no hair left (83) so the headphones slip from her bald head. She just puts on her wig and it now stays firmly on. Should stay on if you have hair. She never wanted to use her expensive hearing aid that never worked, she prefers the pocketalker and she uses it all the time. Good: Compact, light, very good sound quality. The sound amplification range is very good (1 to 10), it is not dangerously high like some other amplifiers. Bad: The volume control (wheel on the side) is a little hard to turn and too small for my 83 year old mother to turn/off/adjust herself. She needs help to turn it on. Would be nice if the level adjustment be seperate from the on/off switch. It would be easier to just press a on/off switch and let the volume level untouched. Cannot use it with a phone. Summary: I recommend it!

   Mother-in-law is very hard of hearing. She also has alzheimer's, is not able or willing to wear her regular aid and has broken and thrown out a few high priced aids. With this unit we are able to control the volume and keep her hands off it. She is able to attend therapy and communicate for the first time in years. I am hard of hearing also and was amazed at the sound of the pocket talker, which is almost as good as my Siemen's which cost in the thousands. There are only a few drawbacks, one that the mic is not directional,is sensitive and picks up all sounds in the area. We use it in quiet settings and my wife has learned to control the unit by aiming the mic at each speaker and away from her mother's own voice, eliminating the echo of her own voice back at her which confuses and bothers her. The staff at her nursing home have commented on how useful the unit is and have discussed getting them.
